Working through the heatwave
Can we deal with it??
Hello again,
Another heatwave here in the UK nearly got me rainmaking in the garden. I can't function in this heat, and on top of it, my tiny studio (with massive heat-absorbing acoustic panels) becomes an oven in the afternoons.
But!
What happened last week?
PODCAST PRODUCER LATEST
I've been working on four Casefile episodes (one finished a few days ago), and the remaining three are at various production stages.
The mid-year break helps us to get ahead and prepare for the 2nd half of 2022 - and it's going to be a good one!
I've had time to listen to rough cuts of the next Casefile Presents show and started playing with some music ideas. Unfortunately, we still aren't sure which project will be released next; therefore, there is a possibility that I will have to work on several at the same time!
I've also been playing with my templates; both for dialogues and scoring. After exporting 15 different versions of a mix, I asked Paulina to sit down, listen and let me know which one was the best.
According to her, they all sound the same…
We've also released Q&A with Vikki Petraitis for our Patreon and premium subscribers, and it's a great episode, definitely worth a listen.
Vikki also published her first novel, and we can't wait to read it.
What else?
I've been working on a trailer for the upcoming Casefile Presents show.
The deadline for the final mix is next week.
(Funny story - I recorded myself as a placeholder for the first draft, and we definitely don't want to leave it like that :D
Fortunately, our Casefile host sent me his lines the next day.)
Oh - I also got a new reverb Cinematic Rooms which I've been testing in my new templates.
CASE STUDIES
I finally got Paulina to upload the latest Case Studies to my website. (My fault as I forgot about them.)
Check it out here - https://mikemigas.com/case-studies/
I list the steps in my production process for each show we do.
YOUTUBE
One video is out this week - a dive into my music session for Crime Interrupted promo video.
I was commissioned to score the video while we were working on the podcast.
It was a bit chaotic, and the video reflects that.
LEARNING
I have finished the Orchestral Mixing course from ThinkSpace education (with Jake Jackson).
I took a few golden nuggets from it, which helped me with the new template.
They had two run-throughs - mixing samples and actual recordings, and it was good to see Jake's approach.
I've started another course from ThinkSpace called How To Score Films and am currently going through it.
I'm also seriously considering furthering my 'proper' education so watch this space…
BOOKS
Exhale is the book I finished this week, and it's all about breath work (and Breathwork). Richie Bostock promotes his knowledge and approach to breathing and lists many different exercises.
And it is just that - an exercise book. There is some writing about the techniques and alternative medicine, but most of the book are various breathing exercises Richie Bostock calls Breathwork.
It's interesting. However, I did enjoy the other book about breathing called Breath by James Nestor more, which was more about the science of it.
Since then, I started taping my mouth at night, which I have to say helped me with my sleep massively (as I've had a lot of problems in the past). I also am conscious of 5.5 seconds of breathing because of the book.
So yeah, Exhale was ok but more an exercise book, but if you are interested in breathing, I recommend Breath more.
Super Senses - this is a book I started for my Rebel Book Club read this month. It's more about the nuance of the standard (Aristotelian) 5 senses model and dividing them into new ones. I'm only 10% in so I will report on it next week.
FUN & LIFE
We went to an amazement park called Wake The Tiger in Bristol, which was very cool! You walk through several rooms designed in such detail that will amaze you.
There is an underlining story that you pursue while finding secret doors and solving puzzles.
We shared a fantastic experience with Rebel Book Club friends, and I recommend it if you are in the area.
Apart from that, I finished The Sandman on Netflix, a decent dark fantasy, so hopefully, they commission the 2nd season.
We tried watching Locke & Key S2; however, I switched it off halfway through episode one as I remembered why I wouldn't say I liked S1 that much. Not my vibe.
But started Pam & Tommy on Disney+, and so far, it's excellent and funny!
I've also started my Invisalign this week, and the first few days were…terrible. I thought I had made a foolish and expensive mistake and wanted to throw these plastics out of the window.
But, it's now day six, and it's alright…I don't mind wearing them, so I reckon my jaw just had to get used to them.
I will journal how effective the treatment is; it should last between 10 months to a year…damn.
That's it for now. Thanks for reading, and I'll see you (hopefully!) next week!
