Work, work, work
Until I die
In the last newsletter, I mentioned that when I was home alone last week, I entered a 'work mode'.
Monday–Thursday, I would wake up, get a coffee and work (with breaks for food and gym) until late.
I used to push myself like that in the past, which usually resulted in migraines, chest pains and other lovely bonuses. Since then, I have taken my health seriously (physical and mental) and prioritised my general well-being.
But.
I was home alone, so I thought, 'let's try it again!'
Yes - I did a lot of work, but it came at a cost.
Come Friday; I rushed a bit of work, therapy, and piano lessons.
Friday afternoon - I was spent. Like literally, I collapsed on the sofa. I had a massive migraine (which resulted in difficulty falling asleep and taking tablets). I had no energy left to do anything that afternoon and watched YouTube instead.
So what are my thoughts?
Never again.
I recently spoke to an experienced composer who reiterated that taking care of ourselves is the priority.
Not to mention my therapist, who, when she saw me, was like, 'what happened to you?'
Looking back, I accomplished a lot of work during these four days, but I lost Friday, and even Saturday wasn't 100% there.
So logically, it wasn't a good deal.
Instead, I should have done regular work days and then taken time to chill, play games and read some books.
On the one hand, it was good to rerun this experiment; it reminded me how bad I was in the past and why I so drastically changed my routines.
But it can be challenging, especially when we enjoy our work. And we want to do the best job. It's essential to take care of ourselves and chill.
Ultimately, it doesn't matter as long as we are happy and enjoy our days - the rest of it is a bonus.
PODCAST PRODUCER LATEST
Busy, busy, busy. For the next four weeks, I am in my studio juggling a Casefile Presents show and Casefile episodes. No days off until the 15th of November!
YOUTUBE
We've released a second video on Matty, the latest podcast from Casefile Presents.
We go behind the scenes of the production and the lessons learnt from working on the project.
LEARNING
Because I am now in the middle of another project + the usual suspects, the school is taking a backseat.
I'm still working on the next assignment here and there, but not as much as I would like to.
BOOKS
Film Music by Kathryn Kalinak. A book I started a couple of days ago. I'm reading it as a part of my course research, but it's an excellent read, too - history and overview of the film score.
The Ride of the Lifetime by Rober Iger. I had this book on my Kindle for a while but picked it up last week because I didn't have anything else I wanted to read. Well, that was a good choice!
I finished it in 3 days. I worked on Disney movies long ago, so it was nice to reminisce a bit. On top of that, Iger writes well, and it's an inspiring read. Of course, we got to remember it's a bit biased:)
The Fabric of Reality by David Deutsch. I gave up on the book, and for now, it goes on my digital shelf of unfinished reads.
FUN
Deliver us the Moon. I started this game a few days ago. The gameplay is simple, but the production and the atmosphere are outstanding. It's an excellent, chill game to relax.
Exception. We started the anime on Netflix, and it's ok. The story is similar to Deliver us the Moon game I'm playing (extinction vibes week, I guess), but the rest of it is meh. But, again, it's not bad, just average.
She-Hulk, the finale, is out. It was a fitting episode of the Marvels sitcom. A bit funny and a bit cringe, but overall, I enjoyed it. Tatiana Maslany plays She-Hulk very well, and I hope she ignores the trolls.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is finally out! There were a couple of twists - one I predicted, the other I didn't. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the series and hope that Season 2 picks up the steam. Excellent production and good storytelling; at least it kept me entertained.
Andor. We started watching Andor this week. It's a story about Cassius Andor from Rogue One and how he becomes the Rebel. It's now up there with The Mandalorian, a brilliant TV. Finally, new stories in the Star Wars universe. Great production and storytelling.
Wirecard. A documentary about the German fintech company fraud. I knew of the scandal unfolding but didn't know the details—a good watch on Netflix.
That's it for now. Thanks for reading, and I'll see you (hopefully!) next week!
