Why art
Last week I attended my cousin’s graduation.
She is the smart one, finished her degree with flying colours, and after earning experience during her studies, she is just about to start a job in a hospital.
It essentially means, literal life and death decisions on a daily basis.
But even doctors listen to podcasts and watch YouTube videos, which makes me feel a little better about my job.
Another family member was also staying with us this week, and when discussing the meaning of work, we concluded that it’s not necessarily finding work that is objectively meaningful (like working in a hospital and saving lives), but rather finding meaning in one’s work.
Which is much easier said than done, but still, better than comparing to others.
Which is a thief of joy.
WHAT AM I WORKING ON
After a delay, the new Casefile Presents show - Julie’s Gone - is out!
We did the post-production on the podcast, with me writing music and putting it all together. It’s been a true team effort, and the hope is that after 50 years, this cold case will see some resolution.
It’s official, Poland loves me.
In all seriousness, so far, the videos I re-recorded in Polish (plus Casefile dub) are doing 100x better than the English ones. So we will keep running the experiments for the rest of the year.
And another one we released last week - the controversial figure of Steven Seagal, and one about remakes.
WHAT AM I READING
The New Menopause by Dr Mary Haver. I don’t tend to read many biology books, but this one caught my eye. It’s a new research into perimenopause and menopause as well as advice on hormone replacement therapy, signs, risks and what to do about them. Menopausal research has been overlooked until recently, and the author aims to change that. Even though I won’t be experiencing it myself, I reckon it’s a helpful read and well put together.
A Book of Secrets by Derren Brown. I like Derren’s shows, but each time I start one of his books, I remind myself that I am not the biggest fan of his writing. It’s like a stream of his consciousness blending philosophy, self-help, psychology and politics. All on paper, with many words that I don’t understand.
WHAT AM I WATCHING
Twin Peaks. We are mid-Season 2, and the common knowledge is that from EP9 to about EP18, there is a noticeable slump in quality. The reason is that the TV network ABC forced Lynch and Frost to reveal Laura’s killer quickly, and after that, the duo stepped back from the show, only coming back to the last few episodes, which are highly rated. Apparently, after decades, the bosses at the network regretted their decision.
That's it for now. Thanks for reading, and I'll see you (hopefully!) next week!
