Time
And how to spend it
There are a handful of authors that, when they announce a new book, I pre-order it without hesitation.
Kevin Kelly is one of them. He is a technologist, author, founder of Wired magazine and a blogger. He is the author of the super popular blog 1000 True Fans; read it if you haven't.
A few years ago, he posted 100 life lessons he jotted down. These were from philosophical to practical on how to use a screwdriver. These were immensely popular, and he decided to develop them into a book, which came out last week, called Excellent Advice for Living.
The book has around 400 maxims, concise lessons for life that are applicable and make you stop and think. I wanted to write all of them on my wall, which is stupid because I can always return to the book.
But I did write one lesson on my wall calendar, and that's
You are what you spend time on.
This paraphrases a quote from Batman Begins, which I always remembered
It's not who you are underneath; it's what you do that defines you.
That little thought had more impact on me than most lectures, lessons or videos I watched.
It's about being particular with our time.
At the end of the day, are we happy with how we spent it?
Every day defines who we are. We wake up fresh, and there are unlimited ways in which we can go. Most of us, myself included, will follow certain habits.
But are these good habits or bad ones?
Are our actions aligned with how we view ourselves, or better, how we would like to be?
It's funny that from all the 400 life lessons, it's that one I wrote down. It says something about what's important to me.
We all have limited time, so we must spend it well.
Whatever that means for us.
I highly recommend the book; even if you are not a big reader, this one is short and sweet!
PODCAST PRODUCER LATEST
Last week I worked on two Casefile Presents shows.
I am doing the final mixes for one of the shows, but Anthony preps the dialogues as they need additional cleaning up and editing.
For the second show, I am producing it from start to finish. I rarely do it now, as we have Anthony and Matt, who do the initial prep for me so that I can focus on the final stages.
Because of the backlog, I took this one myself. Fortunately, it's just six short episodes but still. I forgot how much time it takes to prep it all.
I've been spoiled too long, so it's good to be back in the trenches.
We still have a couple in the queue, and of course, the new Casefile episodes are my priority.
We have some excellent episodes lined up and have been revamping our Youtube channel.
YOUTUBE
Slowly but surely, we are designing a system for the channel. Not only that, but our Casefile YouTube channel is also undergoing some changes, with a new animated video already out!
With the personal channel, I've been recording more shorts, tutorials and entertaining videos and paying more attention to scripting and research. It's fun; slowly, we are building a great team too.
LEARNING
Not much school learning, but we got a new car over a week ago, and as it's 100% electric, I've been reading manuals and watching YouTube videos about it. I'm not a massive fan of cars, but I like tech and gadgets, and I always felt that EVs are the ultimate gadget of the future.
It's been fun learning about the technology, and I am excited to test it on the road!
BOOKS
Excellent Advice for Living by Kevin Kelly. As I wrote at the beginning, I highly recommend checking the book and other writings by KK. He also appeared on the latest Tim Ferris podcast, and it was a good conversation. It's a short quick read but packed with a lot.
Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson. As I read a couple of non-fiction books, it was time for another Sando novel. This one is the first of his secret projects he wrote during Covid. Standalone novels but tied to the Cosmere universe. By the way, his Kickstarter campaign for the stories raised over 40 million dollars!
FUN
Jumanji: The Next Level. We watched the movie as I kind of liked the first one. The second was ok too. Forgettable but entertaining.
That's it for now. Thanks for reading, and I'll see you (hopefully!) next week!
