Self-Deadlines
For the last 18 months, I have been doing a part-time MA degree course. It’s been fun and sometimes challenging with work and other commitments.
The initial end date was sometime in mid-August, but because I submitted the 2nd-to-last project early (and got a good mark for it), I emailed the support to ask if they could let me do the Final Project early, too.
They did.
So I started a month ago with an initial deadline of 3 months from the date (two reviews each month + final submission).
However, I am over it.
Firstly, I have a lot on my plate work-wise.
Secondly, I feel like I got what I wanted from the Master’s, but dragging it for another two months is too much.
So, I decided to impose a deadline on myself. I completed the first draft in four weeks. Then, rather than waiting for notes and months for the 2nd draft, I will do my fixes and submit them next week, and then I intend to submit the final in early May.
One of the conditions for a good grade is to take the notes from the drafts and apply them to the final. Therefore, if the tutors can’t do their notes, then I will lose marks.
So the dilemma was - should I wait for the notes, which can take a few additional weeks, and then submit?
Or do it regardless?
I chose the latter. I did email the team with my plans and intended to stick to my plan. Yes, I will lower my overall mark.
But.
No one, and I mean no one, ever will ask me for it.
No one cares, and no one will except me.
And I already got what I wanted from it - confidence in my compositions, the speed at which I can come up with decent ideas, and my overall musical skill development.
I'm still planning to take courses, learn, and develop, but for now, it is time to move on.
YOUTUBE
I released a fun video on future car chases. Interestingly, it was initially just a video on how electric vehicles sound, but I amended it to include the movie angle.
BOOKS
Follow the money by Paul Johnson. An economics book about the state of UK finances. It’s illuminating but also highly triggering at points. But at the same time, I must remember that countries and states are incredibly complex organisms, so even though we all want clean and simple solutions, it’s impossible. Well, unless AI can help us (like in Terminator).
FUN
Fallout. Another TV series based on the games. Fallout is one of my favourite video game franchises, so I eagerly awaited the Amazon show. And?
It’s good. Very good. It's funny, brutal, well-made and full of video game lore—finally, a good video game adaptation.
That's it for now. Thanks for reading, and I'll see you (hopefully!) next week!
