Podcasting
It has been an interesting week, but I wanted to focus on my London trip.
I took a train to the city to attend the Podcast Show, an annual event in London all about podcasting. It is my 3rd time there, and it was good to meet people from our network and make some new connections.
After that, I wandered around London for a few hours, waiting for my sister to finish work; we caught up over some nice food.
But I wanted to write about the mood change I noticed between the last Podcast Show and this one.
Last year, it was gloomy. As the world was still reeling from the effects of the pandemic and layoffs were on everyone's mind, the podcasting industry was also hit.
People were worried, advertising spending was down, and the full impact of the massive celebrity deals came to light - yes, they were overpaid.
I have been saying it since the beginning.
But this year, there was much more positivity and optimism.
It's not 'back to normal' as the economies around the world are still struggling, but people feel good about the future and the state of podcasting.
The huge deals are out, and the industry is finding its foot in more realistic terms.
Smaller deals, betting on good talent and ideas, and finding ways to make the podcasting business work beyond the ads.
My thoughts?
I came out feeling optimistic about the future. We will still have to adjust to new realities, but we also plan to try new things and experiment. Like everyone else, we have to change with the times.
The goal was never to cash out and be gone but to stay in and keep playing the game.
Because it's a fun game to play.
YOUTUBE
A more positive video this week where I analyse the recent video game adaptations and why I think the tide may be changing as we finally see some good ones.
BOOKS
On the Origin of Time by Thomas Hertog. I wanted to start something other than politics, business, or rubbish self-help, and this book looked alright. The author worked directly with Stephen Hawking so the book is about their latest theories of the universe. It is hard going at times but overall enjoyable.
FUN
Riverside. Last Monday we went to see this Polish prog-rock band. I used to listen to them when I was a teen, and I remember that 20 years ago (!), I saw them with my brother in our city. I don’t listen to them anymore, so it was nostalgic. But mate, 20 years. That memory made me feel old.
Furiosa. We saw the latest Mad Max film last Friday. Overall, it was an entertaining watch, but I think it was a bit too long. The beginning was stretched out, and the ending rushed. The initial impact of the fights, the sounds and visuals wore off by the end of the 2.5 hour runtime. It could be better with a bit of a trim, I enjoyed Fury Road more.
The Boys. And we have finished Season 4! But do not worry, as the latest one drops in less than a month. I think I’ll start the Gen V spin-off in the meantime, it supposed to be alright.
That's it for now. Thanks for reading, and I'll see you (hopefully!) next week!
