Lads night in
There is this famous quote attributed to Blaise Pascal
"All of humanity's problems stem from man's inability to sit quietly in a room alone."
And as Paulina left Benji and me alone for the weekend, I thought about the quote quite deeply.
As she drove off, I immediately started planning the day: record new episodes, mix podcasts, write scripts, clean the house, exercise, and so on.
Filled to the brim with activities.
But as I woke up on Sunday morning, I decided to take it slow. Switch off the alarm, sleep until 9 am, and try to relax. Take in the nice weather.
I still did a little bit of work, can’t trick my nature.
But it’s hard. It’s hard just not to do stuff, isn’t it?
Sit, relax, think.
I would argue that it’s impossible even.
It’s good that Benji is here, as he has mastered the skill of doing absolutely nothing. We can all learn from him.
To slow down and enjoy the day.
I’d skip eating literal shit from the ground though.
WHAT AM I WORKING ON
As always, plenty of happenings.
I will have a few more Crime Interrupted episodes to do next week. I started playing with ideas for the next series by Helen, who wrote The Easey Street Murders (and it should be out this summer).
We also had a video on our Polish Casefile that did quite well, which resulted in comments and subscriptions! I think we're onto something; we just need time.
On YouTube, I published a fun video edited by my youngest brother, Piotr. He really developed his storytelling skills and can time the jokes well, too.
WHAT AM I READING
City of Miracles by Robert Jackson Bennett. Not only did I finish the 2nd book (City of Blades), but also the third (and the last) of the trilogy. As I mentioned before, it took me some time to get into the series, but books 2 and 3 were page-turners. I had a couple of very late nights last week, finishing the series (just like when I was a kid). Highly recommended for any dark fantasy fans.
Napoleon the Great by Andrew Roberts. Paulina and I both started the Divine Cities series, and I told her I would wait until she finished the trilogy before we started another series together (as it’s always fun to discuss the books as we read them). So in the meantime, I’m back on biographies and chose this mammoth 900-page book on Napoleon. It should take me a good few weeks to get through.
WHAT AM I WATCHING
Killers of the Flower Moon. It seems that with age, Martin Scorsese doesn’t give a f*** anymore, with the most recent movies hitting over 3 hours. This one was on my list for a long time, and we finally got to watch it last week. It’s literally like watching a TV series with multiple episodes, or, as Paulina said, like watching someone’s whole life. Fantastic production and a feat of storytelling.
Wolfs. After the Scorsese epic, we put this Pitt/Clooney action comedy on. It wasn’t bad, and it was a perfect comfort movie to watch after dinner. What’s interesting is that because Apple put it on streaming (rather than doing a longer theatrical run) the director Jon Watts got pissed off and said he won’t do a sequel anymore. Oh, well.
That's it for now. Thanks for reading, and I'll see you (hopefully!) next week!
