Dancing through life
A fun one this week.
So before the pandemic, we did a little salsa dancing - a course and semi-regular socials. It was nice because of the people we met there, but I was never into the activity as much.
(By the way, “before the pandemic” means like 6 years ago).
I’m not into Latin music as much, and I felt that the dance itself wasn’t transferable as much.
You can’t go to a Polish wedding and start dancing salsa; it doesn’t work.
Then we moved away, then the pandemic, then a new house and activities.
From time to time, I looked through what was happening around, and you had the usual salsa clubs, some Argentine Tango, and a ballroom. Nothing that piqued my interest.
I did remember my sister mentioning swing dance and how much fun she had when she did it.
There is a community in the city and a few clubs, and last weekend, there was a free spot for an intense Lindy hop course. So we did it.
And yeah, like my little sister said - it was super fun and much more in my corner.
I like blues, jazz, big bands and all that stuff - the dancing is more relaxed, funny and easy to follow.
Yes, you still have to get out of your comfort zone, look stupid, dance with other people you just met, and learn as you go. But I felt that the overall atmosphere was better than salsa, at least for me.
Also, I think salsa attracts more creeps than other dances for various reasons.
Lads, stop it; it’s a dancing course, not a dating event.
The schedule is packed, but we’ll look for another course and maybe do a social every now and then. It is a good way to meet new people.
PODCAST PRODUCER LATEST
What’s happening in podcasting?
Casefile is officially back. We released another episode this week.
We’ve also released a trailer for the upcoming Casefile Presents: The Easey Street Murders podcast. The limited series will be out next week, with Episode 1 dropping on Monday.
Besides, we have plans for another 2 shows in the first 6 months of the year, so I’m starting to plan for it.
YOUTUBE
We released a video I recorded last year. It’s about One Piece music, and even though we missed our window with this one, I think it will pick up when they drop Season 2.
BOOKS
Regretting Motherhood by Orna Donath. The author is an Israeli sociologist, professor and feminist activist. I read some stuff on child-free living in the past, but this is the first proper book on regretting being a parent (in this instance, being a mother). It’s a heavy read - because it’s research writing, the language is a bit academic and stiff in places. But also, it’s a taboo topic, especially in a religious culture where being a mother is pretty much the only choice for women. But a very good read indeed.
Happy Money by Ken Honda. This month, for my book club, the topic is money. I read the primary choice a couple of years ago, so I picked the second - Happy Money. It’s a waste of time, I mean, it could be suitable for people who want to understand money a bit better, but it’s all about the feelings and attitudes to money rather than how it works. So, it is a very shallow finance self-help. Skip.
FUN
The Brothers Sun. I saw good comments, so I started this Netflix series and could not recommend it enough. It’s fun, fresh and really well done. A mixture of martial arts, action and humour set in immigrant Chinese culture. Even though I am not Chinese in America, these stories are relatable as a lot of immigrants go through similar things. I highly recommend it.
Alexander. A docu-series on Netflix about Alexander the Great. I like these historic, dramatised series, but this one wasn’t as good. I felt it was too short and leaned more towards fiction than history. It’s not bad, but it could have been better.
That's it for now. Thanks for reading, and I'll see you (hopefully!) next week!
